The Innovation Quad (IQ) brings learning, research and design together in a place built for collaboration. Founders Hall and Innovation Hall anchor the quad and house the School of Engineering and Computing. Together with the Duke Building on 鶹Ƶ’s historic campus, these facilities support hands-on learning and research in engineering and computer science and foster collaboration across fields.

Near the entrance to Founders and Innovation halls, a solar SmartFlower tracks the sun throughout the day. It opens each morning, folds closed at night and helps power part of both buildings.

Founders Hall houses the Engineering Design, Advanced Prototype and Engineering Prototype labs. Students use tools ranging from 3D printers and CNC machines to hand tools and traditional woodworking equipment to turn designs on paper into working prototypes. The Virtual Reality and Mechatronics labs extend that hands-on approach into simulation and robotics. The building also supports courses in circuits and robotics, along with advanced work in prototyping and design.

At the center of Founders Hall, the Hunt Atrium offers an open place to gather and collaborate. Guest speakers, receptions and student events bring the school community together here.

Innovation Hall extends the Innovation Quad’s hands-on approach across computing, biomedical engineering, physics and robotics. Flexible labs and classrooms bring students and faculty from these fields together to share expertise and approach problems from different perspectives.

The building is home to the Bioinstrumentation, Biomedical and Environmental Engineering labs. These spaces support undergraduate coursework and faculty research into water sanitation and medical diagnostic technology. Shared classrooms and research projects connect students across programs, while faculty offices on every floor keep professors close to the places where students learn and work.

On 鶹Ƶ’s historic campus, Duke Building brings computer science together with mathematics and statistics. It is home to classrooms, faculty offices and labs that support learning and collaboration across these fields.

The Carpenter Lab gives computer science students around-the-clock access to desktop computers and space for independent and group work. Duke 108, formerly the “Robotics Lab”, has moved to Innovation Hall and now serves as an after-hours workspace and a regular meeting place for the Software Innovation Hub, the Programming Team, and the Women in Computer Science student organization.

Located on 鶹Ƶ’s historic central campus, Long Building gives students a dedicated place to turn ideas into playable experiences. Long 105 is home to the Game Design Lab, with adjacent soundproof workstations in Long 108 A–F for focused creative and technical work. Together, these spaces provide access to some of Computer Science’s most advanced computing equipment, supporting the design, visuals, sound and code that bring student-developed games to life.
