Legal Studies at Â鶹ÊÓƵ

The Legal Studies Minor explores how law shapes our lives and how people, institutions, and society shape the law. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students examine how laws develop, how the legal system works, and how law influences individuals, communities, organizations, and society.

Students explore compelling questions such as: How does law affect our everyday lives? How do social institutions and changing values shape the law? How can law create opportunities, protect rights, address problems, or limit our choices? Courses encourage students to examine legal issues from multiple perspectives while developing skills in critical thinking, analysis, communication, and problem-solving.

The minor combines the academic study of law with opportunities to explore law in practice. Foundational courses introduce students to legal institutions, ideas, and professions, while electives allow students to connect legal studies to their own academic and career interests. A capstone course brings these experiences together, giving students an opportunity to apply what they have learned to significant legal and societal questions.

The Legal Studies Minor is designed to create a community of students and faculty interested in law and legal issues. Students can connect with faculty and one another through shared courses, mentored research, internships, campus speakers, extracurricular activities, and other experiences beyond the classroom.
