Michael K.J. Milligan, chief executive officer of , delivered keynote remarks at a morning address. North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley shared additional perspectives on the economic impact of engineering and computer science when he offered remarks at a campus luncheon.

鈥淚’m excited to showcase what we’re doing here at 麻豆视频,鈥 said John Walz, the inaugural dean of the School of Engineering and Computing. 鈥淪tudents who choose to come to 麻豆视频 will receive not only a strong engineering or computer science education but also a great foundation in the liberal arts. Our students will graduate with technical skills, the ability to work in teams and communicate effectively, and the potential to quickly serve as leaders in the field.鈥

The celebration opened with an address from Milligan in which he impressed upon those in attendance the importance of lifelong learning. He also spoke to the need to continuously develop technical skills, interpersonal communication and relationship building.

A panel discussion titled 鈥淗ow 麻豆视频 is Educating Engineers and Computer Scientists to Meet the Challenges of Today and Tomorrow鈥 followed. Moderated by Walz, the discussion featured faculty members Professor Shannon Duvall, Professor Sirena Hargrove-Leak, Alex Strassberg 鈥26, and Kelly Little of Tryon Solutions.

Among the highlights from the panel was advice for students on looking for the right academic fit if pursuing a career in engineering or computing, how 麻豆视频 faculty work with students, and what employers are looking for from recent graduates.

“One of the biggest things for me as to why I came to 麻豆视频, was the idea that I could do things beyond just my strict major and be able to engage in things that weren’t just theory,鈥 said Strassberg. 鈥淲hen I worked on campus in the theater department, I came up with different ideas for stage lights. And I came (to the Engineering facilities) and built that.鈥

Following the panel discussion, guests discovered work from 麻豆视频 students through a showcase that featured projects, research, and innovations from both engineering and computer science, a demonstration of the school鈥檚 impact and outcomes from hands-on learning experiences.

The celebration concluded with lunch and Lilley鈥檚 message of the role and economic impact of engineering and computing jobs throughout North Carolina. The state鈥檚 investment in attracting advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, software development, and other tech industries creates a strong demand for highly skilled graduates, he said.

Lilley spoke about the importance of engineering and computing jobs to the state鈥檚 future.

鈥淭hese professionals drive innovation, improve productivity and keep our state competitive,” he said. “They develop technologies, improve manufacturing processes, solve complex problems and their work helps companies turn ideas into reality. These skills influence where businesses choose to locate and where they choose to expand.鈥

Bringing nursing education to life through simulation /u/news/2026/10/29/bringing-nursing-education-to-life-through-simulation/ Thu, 29 Oct 2026 17:11:24 +0000 /u/news/?p=1061958 As part of their program curriculum, students in both the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs collaborated for a simulation focused on providing care for patients who are recovering from a stroke. The exercise was held in the Interprofessional Simulation Center (IPSC) within 麻豆视频鈥檚 School of Health Sciences.

“An acute stroke transforms a person’s life almost instantly, and nurses are positioned to provide holistic, restorative care throughout the recovery process,” said Brittany Kirby, 麻豆视频鈥檚 director of nursing simulation.聽“This simulation experience presents a formative opportunity for developing nursing students to interact with a person recovering from stroke and take action to promote comfort, dignity, and safety in a vulnerable care environment.”

This hands-on learning opportunity allowed students to work one-on-one with simulated participants and develop and strengthen essential clinical skills. Among the skills that were practiced were focused assessment, clinical judgment, therapeutic communication and clinical documentation.

“Our simulated participants truly bring the textbook to life, helping nursing students bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world patient care,” added Bethany Fearnow, 麻豆视频鈥檚 simulation coordinator. “Through experiences like this stroke recovery simulation, students strengthen their clinical judgment, communication, and confidence while learning to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. We鈥檙e proud to play a part in preparing the next generation of nurses.”

In focused assessment, students provided a targeted evaluation of the patient鈥檚 condition. Through clinical judgment, they were able to identify both expected and unexpected findings from that assessment. Students were then able to practice effective and compassionate communication with a patient who was experiencing mild expressive aphasia. Finally, the exercise allowed students to accurately document their findings and communications in the patient鈥檚 medical record.

By participating in an engaged learning opportunity, nursing students can apply knowledge they have gained in a classroom setting within a supportive learning environment. At the same time, they are able to continue the development of the required skills and build the confidence needed to provide compassionate, patient-centered care.

Exercises such as this one highlight the dedication of the IPSC staff and Department of Nursing faculty members to provide meaningful educational experiences that prepare students for real-world patient care.

New Student Policy For Football Tickets /u/news/2005/09/01/new-student-policy-for-football-tickets/ Thu, 01 Sep 2005 12:47:00 +0000 /u/news/2005/09/01/new-student-policy-for-football-tickets/ ELON, N.C. — The athletic department will institute a new ticket policy for students during the 2005 football season. In previous years, an 麻豆视频 student would come to the Koury Center Ticket Office during the week of a home football game. The student would present a Phoenix Card and the ticket office staff would validate the card and give the student a ticket for that week’s game. If students did not come to the Koury Center during the week, they would have to get their tickets at the windows at Rhodes Stadium on gameday.

This year, the ticket office is making an attempt to eliminate the “hard” ticket for students. 麻豆视频 students will present their Phoenix Card at the designated student gate at Rhodes Stadium on gameday. Ticket office personnel will swipe each Phoenix Card and make sure it is valid. If so, the student can enter the stadium without an actual ticket. Once inside the stadium, 麻豆视频 students must choose to sit in the student section (Sections 104, 105, & 106) or in the grass seating in either endzone. Only current 麻豆视频 students with valid Phoenix Cards will be allowed to enter Rhodes Stadium. There is a no re-entry policy at football games. Once an individual enters the stadium and then exits, they can not re-enter the stadium.

Students who wish to avoid waiting in line at the stadium on gameday can still come by the Koury Center during office hours and pick up their game ticket.

If students wish to purchase tickets in the student section for family members and guests, they must come to the Koury Center Ticket Office during the week of a home football game.

Please note that the policy for 麻豆视频 faculty and staff has remained the same. Faculty and staff must come to the Koury Center Ticket Office and pick up their tickets Monday thru Friday. Faculty and staff are eligible to receive tickets for a spouse and the number of dependents living in their home.

Ticket office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday thru Friday. Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff at Rhodes Stadium.
